Basic Meaning: Master of Mysteries

Senses:

  • Or 'Master of Secrets.' Also written as 金剛薩埵, 金剛手祕密主, 金剛手, 執金剛, and 祕密主. Vajrasattva, who is king of the Yakṣas 夜叉王 and guardian of the secret of buddhas, whose body, speech, and thoughts 三業 are unrevealed. He has this name because he assumes the form of a yakṣa 夜叉 holding a 金剛杵 and protects the Buddha. Vajradhāra and Vajrapāṇi are also named with this title (often written also 大祕密主), which corresponds with the Skt. guhyakādhipatiḥ (Tib. gsang ba'i bdag po), according to the Mahāvyutpatti, entry 4337 and Nakamura. 〔大日經 T 848.18.1a20
