Basic Meaning: Fuliang
Senses:
(d.u.) An immigrant monk from the Wú 呉 state of China. Fuliang traveled to Japan during the Asuka period 飛鳥時代 and studied Sānlùn 三論 at Daianji 大安寺 under Hyegwan 慧灌. He later went to Suí China where he continued his study of Sanlun under Jizang 吉藏 at Jiaxiangsi 嘉祥寺. After returning to Japan, he taught Sanlun at Gangōji 元興寺. In 645, Fuliang was designated one of the
'Ten Teachers'
十師. In 658, he lectured on the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa-sūtra 維摩經 at Yamashinadera 山階寺 (later known as Kōfukuji 興福寺). This lecture marked the beginning of Kōfukujiʼs tradition of holding Vimalakīrtinirdeśa-sūtra assemblies 維摩經會. Fuliang is mentioned in: Tōnomine engi 多武峰緣起 , Fusō ryakki 扶桑略記 [4], Sankoku buppō dentsū engi 三國佛法傳通緣起, Genkōshakusho 元亨釋書 [16], and the Honchō kōsōden 本朝高僧傳 [1].
