Basic Meaning: Zenjōji
Senses:
A temple of the Sōtō school 曹洞宗 in Ujitawara, Tsuzuki-gun, Kyoto. Its mountain name is Hodarakusan 補陀洛山, and its full name is Kannon Myōchi'in Zenjōji 觀音妙智院禪定寺. Construction began in 991 and the temple was completed in 995. It is said to have been founded at the behest of Taishū 平崇 (d.u.) of Tōdaiji 東大寺. Initially it was a Kegon school 華嚴宗 temple, before being converted to Tendai 天台宗, and then becoming Sōtō in 1680 with Gesshū Sōko 月舟宗胡 (1618–1696) as the new founding abbot. Its main object of veneration is Eleven-faced Avalokitêśvara 十一面觀音. See the Zengaku daijiten entry for more information on the temple grounds and its connection to famous historical figures.
