禪戒

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: meditation and morality

Senses:

  • Morality concomitant with meditation (Skt. *dhyāna-saṃvara). See 定共戒. [Charles Muller; source(s): Hirakawa, Nakamura, JEBD, FGD]
  • The Chan/Zen school 禪宗 and the Vinaya school 律宗. [Charles Muller; source(s): Nakamura, JEBD, FGD]
  • Chan/Seon/Zen precepts. The precepts observed in the meditation schools, but these could differ according to time, school, culture, region, etc. Also called 達磨一心戒, 達磨一乘戒, 禪門大戒, 禪門戒—ostensively the Mahāyāna precepts 大乘菩薩戒 transmitted from Bodhidharma. In the Sōtō school this would refer most importantly to the ten grave precepts taught in the Brahmāʼs Net Sutra 十重戒 along with the precepts of the three refuges 三歸依戒 and the three groups of pure precepts 三聚淨戒, collectively referred to as the sixteen items of precepts 十六條戒。 〔禪門授菩薩戒規; 禪戒本義; 佛祖正傳禪戒鈔〕 [Charles Muller; source(s): Nakamura, FGD]
  • Meditation is in itself morality 禪卽戒. Outside of Chan there are no precepts, outside of the precepts there is no Chan. 〔佛祖正傳禪戒鈔〕 [Charles Muller; source(s): Nakamura]
