Basic Meaning: Chan teaching

Senses:

  • The teaching of the Chan school. Also, 禪 the esoteric tradition and 教 the teaching of the scriptures. [Charles Muller; source(s): Nakamura,Yokoi, Soothill]
  • The Chan meditative 禪 (nonverbal) approach, as distinguished from the doctrinal 教 approach to the practice of Buddhism. The first type is known as the special transmission outside the teachings 教外別傳. The articulation of the relation between these two has been a topic of extensive debate in the Korean tradition, especially in the writings of such eminent monks as Jinul 知訥, Gihwa 己和, and Hyujeong 休靜.
