Basic Meaning: Chan teaching

Senses:

  • The Chan meditative (nonverbal) approach, as distinguished from the doctrinal approach to the practice of Buddhism. The first type is known as the special transmission outside the teachings 教外別傳. The articulation of the relation between these two has been a topic of extensive debate in the Korean tradition, especially in the writings of such eminent monks as Jinul 知訥, Gihwa 己和, and Hyujeong 休靜.
