[Korea] Seonwonsa, located in Seonwonmyeon 仙源面 on Ganghwa Island 江華島 within Incheon City 仁川廣域市, was first constructed by Choe U 崔瑀 (?–1249) when the capital of the Goryeo 高麗 (918–1392) was moved to Ganghwa in 1245 to escape from the Mongolian invasion. It was a grand temple during that brief period, known as the
'second major school of the East'
東方第二叢林, and was one of the two largest Seon centers along with the Suseonsa 修禪社 on Jogyesan, now called Songgwangsa 松廣寺. After the capital of the Dynasty was returned to Gaegyeong 開京 (now Gaeseong City) in 1270, the temple had declined and was assumed to have been shut down during the early Joseon 朝鮮 (1392–1897). The temple site was found by the Ganghwa research team of Dongguk University in 1976, and was designated as Historic Site #259 including neighboring districts. After the 4th excavation project (1996–2001) by Dongguk, various relics were found such as lotus-motif roof-tiles, a golden infant Buddha image, a bronze arhat 羅漢 statue and calligraphic sutras.
