Basic Meaning: Zenso
Senses:
(d.u.). A Japanese monk of the Rinzai school 臨濟宗, also called Tenkei 天啓. He was the abbot of Kenshōji 見性寺 in Mino 美濃 (Gifu prefecture 岐阜縣). Zenso was a student of Hakuin 白隱 and wrote a preface to the latterʼs Sokkōroku kaien fusetsu 息耕錄開筵普說. In 1739 Zenso gave a series of lectures at Kenshōji on the Revision of Baizhangʼs Pure Rules 敕修百丈淸規—the primary set of rules regulating Chan/Seon/Zen monastic life. These talks lasted from the ninth day of the second month to the twenty-eighth of the third month (lunar calendar) and were attended by hundreds of monks. Prior to his own talks Zenso went twice to hear Mujaku Dōchū 無著道忠 (1653–1744) lecture on the Pure Rules 淸規 at Ryūtanji 龍潭寺 in Kyoto and had studied Mujakuʼs new addition of the Pure Rules, Shōsōrin ryaku shingi 小叢林略淸規. Although he was considered the second authority on the Pure Rules in the Myōshinji line 妙心派 (after Mujaku), most of the details of his life remain unknown. [Erez Joskovich; source(s): ZGDJT, Sasaki]
