One of the ten largest Rinzai 臨濟宗 Zen temples 十刹, located in Yamanouchi, Kamakura, Kanagawa prefecture. Its mountain name is Fukugenzan 福源山. The temple was originally built by Hōjō Tokiyori 北條時賴 (1227–1263) in 1256 and named Saimyōji 最明寺. After Tokiyoriʼs death the temple fell into disrepair but was rebuilt by Hōjō Tokimune 北條時宗 (1251–1284) during the Kenchō 建長 era (1249–1255) with Lanxi Daolong 蘭溪道隆 (1213–1278) as the new founding abbot. It then took on its present name. The only extant original structure is the Meigetsu-in 明月院 sub-temple 塔頭. [Stefan Grace; source(s): Ui, ZGDJT, Yokoi]
