Chanyuan mengqiu (3 fasc.). Also known as Chanyuan yaolin 禪苑瑤林 and Chan mengqiu 禪蒙求. A work compiled by Cuoyan Zhiming 錯庵志明 (d.u.) during the Song dynasty 宋代, annotated by Xuetang Dejian 雪堂德諫 (d.u.), and published in 1255. Zhiming, based at Shaolinsi 少林寺 in Henan 河南 province, compiled this work based on the Tang period 唐代 Mengqiu 蒙求 by Li Han 李瀚 in order to instruct new monks on the lives and sayings of the Chan patriarchs from Śākyamuni through to those of the Song period such as Shoushan Shengnian 首山省念 (926–993), Dahui Zonggao 大慧宗杲 (1089–1163), and Juefan Huihong 覺範慧洪 (1071–1128). It is composed of 2,248 characters arranged into 562 passages. This work is considered a fundamental primer in the Chan/Seon/Zen tradition and has been published several times over the centuries in China and Japan.
