禪那

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: dhyāna

Senses:

  • A transliteration of the Sanskrit. While having the general meaning of meditation or calm abiding (靜慮, ), channa can also have other specific connotations, depending on the context. For instance, in the Yuanjue jing 圓覺經, dhyāna meditation is clearly distinguished from the standard definitions of śamatha  and vipaśyanā , being a third type of meditation which both combines and transcends the other two. The four dhyāna 四禪 are four degrees through which the mind frees itself from all subjective and objective hindrances and reaches a state of absolute indifference and annihilation of thought, perception.
