Basic Meaning: meditation weight

Senses:

  • is a 'weight' (made of wood or nephrite [cheap, whitish jade (ke ) ] tied to the top of the head with a string attached to the ears. If the meditator dozes off and tilts to the side, the weight will wake him up. See 出曜經 (T 212.4.639c24-25); also 釋氏要覽 T 2127.54.297b7. [Griffith Foulk; source(s): T212]
  • A wooden scepter used to warn monks against their dozing while doing seated meditation. Not much used nowadays.
