Basic Meaning: five schools of Chan

Senses:

  • Five Chan schools, viz. Linji 臨濟宗; Weiyang 潙仰宗; Yunmen 雲門宗; Fayan 法眼宗, and Caodong 曹洞宗; the fourth was removed to Korea; the second disappeared; the other three remained, the first being most successful; in the Song it divided into the two schools of Yangqi 楊岐 and Huanglong 黃龍.
