禪門拈頌集

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: Compilation of Examinations of and Verses on Ancient Precedents

Senses:

  • Thirty fascicles; HBJ 5.1–925. Abbreviated as 禪門拈頌 and 拈頌集. A work by the by the eminent Seon master of the mid-Goryeo dynasty (918–1392) Hyesim 慧諶 (1178–1234), who was the most prominent student of Jinul 知訥 (1158–1210). The Seonmun yeomsong jip consists of 1125 ancient precedents based upon episodes from the lives and sermons of various Zen patriarchs and masters, from Śākyamuni to the Song dynasty 宋代. Additionally, it contains important prose and verse comments by Chinese Chan monks from the Tang 唐代 and Song dynasties arranged in order of transmission from master to disciple. The work was completed in 1226, and, though the date of publication is nowhere stated in the work, it seems probable that it was almost immediately printed at Haeinsa 海印寺, the famous temple in Gyeongsang-namdo 慶尙南道, where the large Korean edition of the Tripiṭaka 高麗大藏經 was carved between 1236 and 1251. This extensive collection, which comprises the entire fifth volume of the HBJ, is an important text for study by adherents of the gong-an-oriented meditation schools throughout East Asia. A mimeographed copy of the original Haeinsa text of the Seonmun yeomsong jip in the possession of the library of Hanazono University, Kyoto, has been published in ten volumes.
