禪雲寺

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: Seon-unsa

Senses:

  • Seon-unsa is located in Gochang-gun 高敞郡, Jeolla bukdo 全羅北道. There are several narratives regarding the foundation of the temple, but the prevailing view is that this temple was founded by Seon master Geomdan 黔丹 during the reign of King Wideok (威德王 r. 554–598) of the Baekje 百濟 Dynasty. The temple has a history of repeated destructions and reconstructions through the Goryeo 高麗 (918–1392) and Joseon 朝鮮 (1392–1910) periods. The present structures of this temple, including the Buddha Hall, were mostly established during the reign of King Gwanghae-gun (光海君 r.1608–1623) of the Joseon Dynasty. Through the end of the Joseon Dynasty, Seon-unsa went through several cycles of reconstruction. The temple is famous for worship of Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva 地藏菩薩, one of the several bodhisattvas who are revered by Korean Buddhists. One of the other attractions of Seon-unsa is a flower which blooms in winter, camellia. Both the belief in Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva and the camellia have become synonymous with Seon-unsa. Baekpa Geungseon 白坡亘琁 (1767–1852) taught Seon widely at Seon-unsa temple, and provoked the most intensive doctrinal controversies of the modern Buddhist world by having a correspondence involving disputes about the essential points of Seon, with Seon master Cho-ui 草衣 (1786–1866). This gave a fresh impetus to the Buddhist world at a time that it was losing its vitality. Baekpa was the monk who tried to preserve Korean Seon by reestablishing Seon tradition at a modern time of change. [O. B. Chun]
