Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: Suyeon

Senses:

  • (1651–1719); Korean monk from the mid-Joseon dynasty. Also known as Muyong 無用. He was born on March 13th, 1651. He lost both parents at the age of 13 and lived with his elder brother until he decided in 1669 to go to Songgwangsa 松廣寺 and enter the saṃgha. He became the disciple of Hyegwan 惠寬 and received the Buddhist precepts from Hyegong 慧空.
In 1672, he went to Seon-amsa 仙巖寺 and studied both seon  and gyo  under Chimgoeng Hyeonbyeon 枕肱懸辯 (1616–1684). He later went to Sangbaeg-unam in Baeg-unsan and practiced Seon meditation. At Hyeonbyeonʼs recommendation, however, Suyeon became the disciple of Baeg-am Seongchong (栢庵 性聰; 1631–1700) of Eunjeog-am 隱寂庵 in Songgwangsa 松廣寺 and studied the tripiṭaka. Upon the completion of his studies with Seongchong he continued his cultivation of Seon meditation at Yongmunsa 龍門寺.
In 1680 he held a public lecture at Sinseon-am 神仙庵 in Jinggwangsa 澄光寺. In order to accommodate the large number of people coming to his lectures Suyeon had to move to Seonamsa and Songgwangsa. He at one point went to Sangbaegun-am to meditate, but returned at the sincere request of those who wished to attend his lectures. He also assisted Seongchongʼs publication of Buddhist scriptures. After Seongchongʼs death he taught at Chilburam 七佛庵. When his disciple Yaktan (若坦; 1668–1754) organized a great meeting on Hwaeom 華嚴 thought and Seon verse (yeomsong 拈頌) in 1719, he was asked to preside as the host. He passed away the same year on October 17th at the age of 69. His essays, letters, and poems can be found in the Muyongdang jip 無用堂集. [Juhn Ahn]
