Basic Meaning: Akino Kōdō
Senses:
(1858–1934) A monk of the Sōtō school 曹洞宗 of Japanese Zen. He was a native of Hatsu (Fukuoka 福岡 prefecture), and his Buddhist name was Dainin 大忍. Akino took the tonsure under Itō Keidō 伊藤慶道 (d.u.) from Chōkoji 長興寺, and later became dharma heir to Katō Gen'ei 加藤玄裔 (d.u.). In 1886, after graduating from schoolʼs university at Kichijōji 吉祥寺 (Tokyo), he resided at Tentokuji 天德寺, where he studied Nishiari Kin'eiʼs 西有穆山 (1821–1910) work on Dōgenʼs Shōbōgenzō 正法眼藏. In 1892 he became superintendent 學監 of the Sōtō school seminary 曹洞宗大學林. Later he was appointed Zen master 師家 and an instructor at the schoolʼs head temple of Eiheiji 永平寺. In 1909, he became the superintendent general 總監 of the schoolʼs university (currently Komazawa University). In 1915 he moved to reside in Kasuisai 可睡齋 temple (Shizuoka 靜岡). In 1929, he was appointed as the seventh chief abbot 貫首 of Sōjiji 總持寺, and on the following year as the chief officer 管長 of the Sōtō school. In his later years, he delivered a series of talks on the Shōbōgenzō at Tokyo Imperial University (now the University of Tokyo). Included among his many writings are the Zenshū kōyō 禪宗綱要, Shōbōgenzō kōwa 正法眼藏講話, Goi yōketsu 五位要訣, Jūyōroku kōwa 從容錄講話, and Mokushō Enzū zenshi goroku 默照圓通禪師語錄. [Erez Joskovich; source(s): ZGDJT]
