Basic Meaning: karmic impressions in the flow of continuity of sameness
Senses:
(Skt. niṣyanda-vāsanā). The latent tendency of the mind and body to perpetuate karma with effects being of the same character as their causes. Closely related to the idea of linguistically conditioned karmic impressions 名言習氣. The opposite karmic tendency from ripened karmic impressions, which are altered in their ripening 異熟習氣, thus producing results that have a different character from their causes. In Yogâcāra discourse,
'sameness in type'
usually refers specifically to continuity in terms of the three karmic moral qualities of wholesomeness 善, unwholesomeness 惡, and indeterminacy 無記, that are carried through the seven forthcoming consciousnesses 七轉識, and which perfume the ālayavijñāna in the form of linguistic seeds 名言種子. [Charles Muller; source(s): Nakamura, JEBD]
In Chan/Seon, this model holds relevance in theoretical explanations of the problems of sudden and gradual enlightenment. For example, in Korean Buddhism, according to those such as Jinul 智訥 who advocate the view of sudden enlightenment followed by gradual cultivation, even after an initial sudden awakening, one must gradually purify oneʼs mind in order to eliminate these tendencies. On the other hand, advocates of the sudden enlightenment/sudden cultivation approach (i.e. Seongcheol 性徹) claim that these tendencies are completely eliminated when one attains enlightenment. Cf. 習氣.
