筠州洞山悟本禪師語錄

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: Recorded Sayings of Chan Master Dongshan Wuben of Yunzhou

Senses:

  • Yunzhou Dongshan Wuben chanshi yulu. One fascicle. The record of Chan master Dongshan Liangjie 洞山良价 (807–869), compiled by Shigetsu Ein 指月慧印 (1689–1764); also known as Tōzan daishi goroku 洞山大師語錄 (T 1987A.47.507a27). The most comprehensive of all the records of Dongshan Liangjie, commonly referred to as the Record of Dongshan. Its compiler, the mid-Tokugawa era (1603–1868) Japanese Sōtō school 曹洞宗 monk Shigetsu Ein, had no direct access to the Chinese Ming period (1368–1644) compilation. Instead, he based his work upon materials existing in Japan in his time, which consisted of the writings of Dōgen Kigen 道元希玄 (1200–1253) and other Japanese Sōtō masters. Additionally, Shigetsu used Gimoku Genkaiʼs 宜默玄契 Tōzan gohon zenji goroku 洞山悟本禪師語錄, which had been compiled some twenty years earlier, re-edited and rearranged its contents. He appended Gimokuʼs Tōzan gohon zenji goroku no yo 洞山悟本禪師語錄之餘 to his work, while attributing it to its original compiler. Shigetsu also included in his work several Dongshanʼs writings. Included among these are his longer poems, such as the Baojing sanmei 寶鏡三昧, the Xinfengyin 新豐吟; shorter verses; prose selections; admonitions to himself and his disciples; and letters correspondence with his mother.

In addition to the Record of Dongshan, Shigetsu also compiled a record of Dongshanʼs disciple Caoshan Benji 曹山本寂 (840–901), the Fuzhou Caoshan Yuanzheng chanshi yulu 撫州曹山元證禪師語錄 (T 1987A.47.526c20). This work contains the Wuweixianjue 五位顯訣 usually ascribed to Dongshan, since Shigetsu believed them to have been written by Caoshan. It is for this reason that the verses are mentioned by title only in Shigetsuʼs record of Dongshan. Shigetsuʼs two compilations have always been considered complementary, and together are given the name Sōtōnishiroku 曹洞二師錄 (The Records of the Two Sōtō Masters).
