Basic Meaning: Hanjun
Senses:
(1038–1112) A priest of the Shingon school 眞言宗 and abbot of Mandaraji 曼荼羅寺 on Mt. Daigo 醍醐山. Hanjun was initially ordained at Kōfukuji 興福寺 before receiving initiation into the Ono branch 小野 of the Shingon school under Jōson 成尊. In 1106, he became chief administrator of Tōji 東寺. After becoming the abbot of Mandaraji, Hanjun was involved in a dispute with his fellow disciple Gihan 義範 over possession of a collection of manuscripts and ritual implements thought to have belonged Kūkai 空海. In an effort to preserve these artifacts, Hanjun transferred ownership to Emperor Shirakawa 白河天皇. This collection is the source for many of the extant manuscripts of Kūkaiʼs writings. He was posthumously awarded the titles of Toba sōjō 鳥羽僧正 and Goono sōjō 後小野僧正.
