Basic Meaning: scripture
Senses:
Etymologically, a warp, that which runs lengthwise, thus threads, or threaded together, which leads to the meaning of laws, canons, classics. Thus, a book; a scripture, a classic. The recorded words of a sage. This becomes the primary Chinese translation of the Sanskrit term sūtra (Pāli sutta; Tib. mdo sde). Also called 契經 and 經本. the sutras in the Tripiṭaka are the sermons attributed to the Buddha; the other two divisions are 律 the Vinaya, and 論 the śāstras, or Abhidharma; cf. 三藏. Sutras usually begin with the words 如是我聞
'Thus did I hear,'
