Basic Meaning: Xu Baolin zhuan

  • The Xu Baolin zhuan (Continued Chronicle of the Baolin Monastery) is a Chan Buddhist text in four fascicles reportedly compiled by Nanyue Weijing 南嶽惟勁 (d.u., fl. 907) during the Kaiping 開平 era (907–911) of the Later Liang 後梁 (907–923) when he was residing at Mt. Nanyue 南嶽山. Weijing was a Chan Buddhist monk native of Yongtai county 永泰縣 in Fuzhou 福州 (Fujian 福建 province) and a dharma-heir of Xuefeng Yicun 雪峰義存 (822–908). At present, no surviving witness of the text has been found. The Xù Bǎolín zhuàn is mentioned, along with other works, in Weijingʼs entry in the Zǔtáng jí 祖堂集 (K.1503; B25, no. 144; second half of the 10th century) at the end of fascicle 11: 「[…] 《續寶林》、《鏡燈》、《漩澓》、《防邪論》,《插釋贊》,廣流於世。」 (ZTJ_011–14.20 to ZTJ_011–14.21, in Zen bunka kenkyūjo 1994, p. 439; Sūn, Kinugawa, and Nishiguchi 2007, p. 528; see also CBETA 2021.Q4, B25, no. 144, p. 520b6–7). According to the Sòng gāosēng zhuàn 宋高僧傳 (T 2061), fascicle 17, the Xù Bǎolín zhuàn possibly collected materials related to the Chan masters after the Zhenyuan 貞元 era (785–805) of the Tang 唐代: 「勁續《寶林傳》,蓋錄貞元已後禪門祖祖相繼源脉者也。」 (Fàn 1987, p. 431; see also CBETA 2021.Q4, T50, no. 2061, p. 818c7–8). A similar statement can be read in the Jǐngdé chuándēng lù 景德傳燈錄 (T 2076), fascicle 19: 「師於梁開平中,續寶林傳四卷。紀貞元之後禪門繼踵之源流也。」 (JDCDL_019–28.19 to JDCDL_019–28.21, in Zhōnghuá dàzàngjīng biānjí júbiān 1994, Vol. 74, p. 231; see also CBETA 2021.Q4, T51, no. 2076, p. 360b13–14). In contrast, the Shìshì tōngjiàn 釋氏通鑑 (X76, no. 1516), fascicle 12, mentions that Weijingʼs compilation recorded encounter dialogues related to the Chan masters after the Guanghua 光化 era (898–901) of the Tang: 「南嶽惟勁頭陀,集光化以來宗師機緣,續寶林傳四卷。」 (CBETA 2021.Q4, X76, no. 1516, p. 128a12–13; punctuation modified). It is generally believed that the Xù Bǎolín zhuàn served as a source for the compilation of the Zǔtáng jí or the Jǐngdé chuándēng lù (see Jia 2006, p. 51; Jorgensen 2005, pp. 741, 745; Yanagida 1980–1984, vol. 3, pp. 1586–88). However, unlike the Bǎolín zhuàn, the text is never quoted explicitly in the two records.
