Basic Meaning: Gidō Shūshin

Senses:

  • (1325–1388) A Japanese monk of the 夢窗 lineage of the Rinzai school 臨濟宗 who was born in Tosa 土佐 (Kōchi 高知 prefecture) with the surname Taira . Cognomens include Kūge Dōnin 空華道人. It is said that his mother, of the Fujiwara 藤原 family, carried him in the womb for thirteen months. At age eight he read the Linji lu 臨濟錄, and at age fourteen he joined the monkhood at Hieizan 比叡山 and received the precepts 受戒. At age seventeen, he entered Rinsenji 臨川寺 in Kyoto to study under Musō Soseki 夢窗疎石 (1275–1351), and after several years, inherited his dharma. Following this, he made plans to visit Ming China but was unable to go due to illness. After Musō passed away, Shūshin went to study under Ryūzan Tokken 龍山德見 (1284–1358) at Kenninji 建仁寺 before being invited to Engakuji 圓覺寺 in the Jōwa era 貞和 (1345–1350) by Motoi , the governor 管領 of Kamakura. In 1366, he became the abbot of Zenpukuji 善福寺 and in 1371 he was invited by the Uesugi 上杉 clan to be the founding abbot of Hōonji 報恩寺 in Jōhoku 城北, Kamakura. During this twenty-two year period living in Kamakura, he produced a great deal of original poetry and lectured on the work of Zhou Bi 周弼 (1194–ca. 1255), including on his Santishi 三體詩. Shūshinʼs works include the Kugeshū 空華集, Kūge nichiyū kufu ryakushū 空華日用工夫略集, Zengi gemon shō 禪儀外文抄, Kugeman rokushō 枯崖漫錄抄, Teiwa ruishu soen renhō shū 貞和類聚祖苑聯芳集, Tōzan geshū shō 東山外集抄, and Gidō oshō goroku 義堂和尙語錄 (4 fasc.)
