[Charles Muller; source(s): Ui, Nakamura, JEBD, Hirakawa, Yokoi]
[konma] Proceedings, ritual or ceremony performed by an authoritative clerical group. In this sense, it is usually a technical term used by the Vinaya schools 律宗. Thus, performance, service 儀式, duty; religious action 作法, moral duty; especially a meeting of the monks for the purpose of ordination, or for the confession 懺悔 of sins and absolution, or for expulsion of the unrepentant. A ceremony in which one vows to observe the precepts. There are numerous kinds of karma, or assemblies for such business, ordinarily requiring the presence of four monks, but others five, ten, or twenty. See also 七羯磨.
