翹足

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: to stand on tiptoe

Senses:

  • To stand on one leg. To lift up oneʼs foot. When Śākyamuni first met Dīpaṃkara Buddha 然燈佛 (or by some accounts Tiṣya Buddha 弗沙佛) in a previous life, he was very much impressed by his sanctity. He therefore chanted hymns of praise standing on one leg for seven days. From this anecdote the meaning perfection of zeal (vīrya-pāramitā 進滿) is derived (Skt. eka-cara, pāde pādam ādhāya). 〔正法眼藏; 四教儀 T 1931.46.777b25〕 [Charles Muller; source(s): Hirakawa, Gakken, Nakamura, JEBD, M-W, Yokoi]
