Basic Meaning: saint
Senses:
A holy man; sage. In the pre-Buddhist Chinese classics, this term referred to the enlightened emperor or king as a beneficent ruler, or to great teachers such as Confucius 孔子. In subsequent Chinese translations of Indic Buddhist texts, it was used to render the Sanskrit ārya, denoting an enlightened person—a buddha 佛 or bodhisattva 菩薩 (Skt. ārya-jana). In Abhidharma and Yogâcāra technical usage, a practitioner who is at the level of the path of seeing 見道 or above. In addition to buddhas and bodhisattvas, this can also refer to arhats 阿羅漢, pratyekabuddhas, and other kinds of beings on the path who are beyond the level of applied practices,
