Basic Meaning: saint

Senses:

  • A holy man; sage. In the pre-Buddhist Chinese classics, this term referred to the enlightened emperor or king as a beneficent ruler, or to great teachers such as Confucius 孔子. In subsequent Chinese translations of Indic Buddhist texts, it was used to render the Sanskrit ārya, denoting an enlightened person—a buddha or bodhisattva 菩薩 (Skt. ārya-jana). It is also written as 聖者, and simply as . [Charles Muller; source(s): Ui, Nakamura, Yokoi, JEBD, Iwanami]

In addition to buddhas and bodhisattvas, this can also refer to arhats 阿羅漢, pratyekabuddhas, and other kinds of beings on the path who are beyond the level of applied practices, 'post-learners'  無學. Such enlightened persons are to be distinguished from ordinary unenlightened people, usually written as 凡人 or 異生. [Charles Muller]
