Basic Meaning: holy ground
Senses:
Holy land, sacred ground, sacred space. The land where the image or stūpa of a saint, such as the Buddha, is placed. A rendering of 靈塔 (caitya),or 靈場 (tīrtha). The best-known in Buddhism are the four sacred locations 四大聖地 of: (1) the Buddhaʼs birth in Lumbinī 藍毘尼園), (2) his enlightenment in Bodhgaya 佛陀伽耶, (3) his first sermon at Sārnāth 鹿野苑, and (4) his entry into nirvana 入滅.
