Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: Neungin Seonwon

Senses:

  • (Lit. Śākyamuni Seon Center). Neungin Seonwon was established in 1986 by Ven. Jigwang 智光 in the southern province of the capital Seoul. As of June 2001, Neungin-Seonwon had four domestic branches and 2 oversea branches. Since 1998, it has been reconstructing Gungnyeongsa 國寧寺 temple in the north of Seoul which represents nation-protecting spirit of Korean Buddhism. Most of the Neungin Seonwon headquarters are managed by lay volunteers. Its lay organization consisting of more than 200,000 members makes it the largest of its type in Korea, managed through a hierarchical order. Lay practitioners involved in the Neungin Seonwon vary widely in terms of social, age strata, and regional origin. In 2006, the Neungin Seonwon was preparing to open a graduate school of Buddhism planned to be located in Hwasung-gun 華城郡, Gyeonggi-do 京畿道. The major concern of Neungin-Seonwon lies in modernizing, publicizing, and organizing Korean Buddhism through systematic missionary activities, which have been undertaken in countries such as America, Japan. The organization provides beginners with general, introductory lectures focused on the scientific, rational features of Buddhism. Advanced students are given more detailed doctrinal discourse, practical instruction in meditation, and teachings of various methods of Buddhist worship according to their capacities. The variety of educational programs of this institute encourage lay people to have confident, positive attitudes toward Buddhism. The Neungin Seonwon provides numerous service schedules for religious lives of the laity consisting of prayer, meditation, chanting mantra etc. along with lectures of doctrinal study. On the other hand, they also help trainees abandon fortune-seeking attitudes which have created problems for Korean Buddhism. [O. B. Chun]
