Basic Meaning: a new insight or understanding one reaches oneself
Senses:
Becoming aware of something (Skt. sva-buddha, ātma-saṃveda). A technical term in Buddhist logic 因明, the complement of 悟他
'making others aware.'
According to Dignāga and many other Buddhists and non-Buddhists in the Indian logic tradition, a pramāṇa 量 must be a cognitive mode (such as perception or inference) that provides a type of cognition or knowledge (prameya 所量) that cannot be acquired by any other means, and the knowledge thus acquired must be new, not something previously known. 自悟 signifies gaining a new insights, understandings, knowledge by and for oneself (svārthânumāna 自比量), especially by logical means. Since
'reasoning for others'
(parārthânumāna 他比量) is done publicly, usually in debate, the
'rules'
and stipulations for what constitutes a valid argument are stricter than when merely reasoning by/for oneself. The 悟 is meant to emphasize that this involves acquiring new knowledge.
