Basic Meaning: contradiction of oneʼs own prior statements

Senses:

  • Soothill/Hodous translate as 'manifest contradiction.' It is a direct contradiction seen between the subject and predicate of the proposition, with the standard example being given of the statement "my mother is barren." A technical term in Buddhist logic 因明. One of the nine fallacies in a proposition 宗九過. Also listed as 自語相違過 (Skt. svârtha-viruddha; svavacana-viruddha).
