Basic Meaning: Jigyeom
Senses:
Also 志謙 (1145–1229). A mid-Goryeo period monk. Jigyeom was called Yangji 讓之, but his original name was Hakdon 學敦. He was the son of Jeonui 田毅, who held the position of Geomgyo taeja cheomsa 檢校太子詹事, and hailed from Yeongkwang. In 1155 he attained enlightenment at the age of 11 from Sachung 嗣忠 and was ordained in the following year at Geumsansa. He was also proficient in non-canonical texts. In 1170, after passing the Seonseon 禪選, he became abbot of Deunggosa 登高寺 in 1189, then he became Seonsa in 1196 and Daeseonsa in 1204. He was the chief leader of many domestic and overseas Seon practice sessions 禪會. When the rulership was looking to select the Royal Preceptor 王師 from among the monks of the Two Schools and Five Teachings 兩宗五教 he was recommended and installed to the position and stayed at Gwangmyeongsa 廣明寺 and he also became Royal Preceptor during the time of Gojong. Starting with the son of Choe Chungheon 崔忠獻, the sons of gentry-officials became his disciples and shaved their heads, and it is said that the quality of his disciples was exceptionally flawless. In 1219 after he received permission to retire from the king he stayed for ten years at Hwajangsa 華藏寺 of Jangdan 長湍. Jigyeom died on July 7, 1229 at the age of 85. His posthumous title was Jeonggak Guksa 靜覺國師. Yi Gyubo 李奎報 wrote his epitaph and he composed the Jongmunwonsangjip 宗門圓相集.
