Basic Meaning: Biography of the Hermitage-Dwelling Zen Master Shidō Bunan
Senses:
A short biography of Zen master Shidō Bunan 至道無難 (1603–1676), written by Tōrei Enji 東嶺圓慈 (1721–1792). Bunan was the teacher of Dōkyō Etan 道鏡慧端 (1642–1721), whom Hakuin Ekaku 白隱慧鶴 (1686–1769) considered as his most important teacher. Tōrei, Hakuinʼs immediate disciple and a Zen historian, wrote the biography as part of his scholarly efforts to promote Hakuinʼs line of Myōshinji branch 妙心寺派 of Japanese Rinzai 臨濟宗. The work is found in Hakuinʼs Collected Works (Hakuin osha zenshu, Vol. I, pp. 369–379). Also written 開山至道無難菴主禪師行錄. [Erez Joskovich; source(s): ZGDJT]
