Basic Meaning: Ryōchū

Senses:

  • Ryōchū (1199–1287). He was born in Iwamikuni 石見國 (now Shimane Prefecture 島根県), entering the saṃgha at Gakuenji in Izumo at the age of twelve. While at Gakuenji he studied Buddhism broadly, including the traditions of Tendai 天台, Abhidharma 倶舍, Shingon 眞言, Hossō 法相, Zen , and Vinaya 戒律. under Shinshin and Enshin, and subsequently traveled to study under such leading scholars as Ryōhen, Dōgen, and Eichō. In 1236, he became the student of Benchō 辯長 (1162–1238) with whom he studied under until 1258. He later taught independently, founding the Goshinji 悟眞寺 at Kamakura (later renamed to Kōmyō-ji). He inherited the mantle of leader of the Chinzei branch 鎭西派 of the school from Shōkō 聖光 and he would later be acknowledged as the third patriarch of the Japanese Jōdo tradition following Hōnen and Benchō. His six primary disciples each founded their own lineages: Ryōgyō, the Shirahata Branch; Shōshin, the Fujita Branch; Sonkan, the Nagoe Branch; Dōkō, the Sanjō Branch; Reia, the Ichijō Branch; and Jishin, the Kobata Branch. Ryōchū was the author of a number of commentaries and sub-commentaries on key Pure Land works, many of which are collected in the Jōdoshū zensho 淨土宗全書 (Kyoto: Sankibō busshorin, 1970), vols. 2, 4, 7. Among his numerous works are the Kangyōsho denzu ki 觀經疏傳通記, Senchakushū ketsugi shō 選擇集決疑鈔, Tetsusenchaku shō 徹選擇鈔, Jōdo shūyō shūchō sho 淨土宗要集聽書, etc, [Charles Muller, M. Radich]
