Basic Meaning: Ryōhen

  • (1194–1252) Japanese monk of the Hossō tradition 法相宗, a prolific and influential writer on Yogâcāra 唯識 doctrine. His name was Shingan 信願, posthumously titled as Ren'a 蓮阿, and was also known to the world as Ikoma Sōzu 生駒僧都 and Ren'a Bosatsu 蓮阿菩薩. Born in Kyoto, he entered the order as a youth at Kōfukuji 興福寺 in Yamato 大和, where he learned the Hossō (Yogâcāra) teachings from Kakuhen 覺遍, becoming especially proficient at Buddhist logic 因明 (Skt. hetu-vidyā). In 1230 he became a lecturer of the Ceremony for the Vimalakīrti-nirdeśa-sūtra 維摩會. He received full ordainment 具足戒 soon after, and worked with others to re-energize the practice of adhering to the precepts. In 1241 he secluded himself at Chikurinji 竹林寺 in Ikoma 生駒, after which he helped to restore the Chisoku-in 知足院 of Tōdaiji 東大寺. He also received instruction in Zen 禪宗 practice from Shōichi Kokushi 聖一國師, as well as being engaged in Pure Land practices of mindfulness of the name of the Buddha. His writings include the Shinshin yōketsu 眞心要決, Immyōdaisho shishō 因明大疏私抄, Hyōmuhyōshō shō 表無表章鈔, Kanjin kakumu shō 觀心覺夢鈔, Shūkyōroku yōgi 宗鏡錄要義, Hossō nikanshō 法相二卷鈔, and the Nembutsu ōjō kesshin ki 念佛往生決心記.
