色法

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: form dharmas

Senses:

  • Physical existence; material existence; physical factors. In Yogâcāra theory, all existence is divided into form dharmas and mental dharmas 心法. Those which have the properties of occupying space, being physically obstructive and subject to decay are called form dharmas. The five organs of sense and their objects are all considered as form dharmas. These factors are those that comprise the aggregate of form 色蘊 among the five aggregates 五蘊, whereas mental dharmas comprise the aggregate of consciousness 識蘊. In both the Abhidharma and Yogâcāra categorization of dharmas, form dharmas are grouped into three categories that include eleven specific types: (1) the five faculties 五根 (visual , auditory , olfactory , gustatory , and touch ); (2) the five kinds of objects 五境 (form , sound , odor , flavor , and tactile ); (3) non-disclosive form 無表色. All of these are understood to arise from their own distinctive seeds, not being derivatives of other dharmas (Skt. rūpa; Tib. gzugs). 〔 成唯識論 T 1585.31.4c8〕 [Charles Muller; source(s): Nakamura, YBh-Ind, Hirakawa]
