Basic Meaning: Eichō
Senses:
(1428–1504) A monk of the Rinzai-shū, whose pseudonym was Tōyō 東陽. Eichō was born in the Kamo District of Mino Province, with the family name of Toki 土岐. At the age of five years he became a page of Gyokushū 玉岫 in the Tenryūji 天龍寺. Later Sekkō 雪江 of the Ryūanji 龍安寺 gave him the certification 印可 to teach. In 1481 he became the superintendent monk of the Daitokuji 大德寺. One year later he moved to the Myōshinji 妙心寺, and three years after he became superintendent monk at the Suisenji 瑞泉寺 in Owari. Returning to Mino he founded the Shōrinji 少林寺 and later also the Daisenji 大仙寺 and the Jōeji 定慧寺. He was given the posthumous title of Daidō Shingen zenji 大同眞源禪師. His works include Shūmon shōtō roku (12 fascicles) 宗門正燈錄, Mukuteki (6 fascicles) 無孔笛 and Zenrin kushū (2 fascicles) 禪林句集.
