Basic Meaning: tea and Chan/Seon meditation are one
Senses:
In China, the notion that
'Tea and Seon meditation are one and the same'
held a long currency. In Korea, this concept did not become not widespread until the mid-Goryeo 高麗 Dynasty. It is said that by that time, tea had become so popular in the daily lives of the common people that they started to drink tea at tea houses as well as at home. However, during the suppression of Buddhism during the Joseon 朝鮮 period, the presence of the tea culture seriously diminished, being preserved mainly in temples ensconced deeply in the mountains. See 茶道. [Ockbae Chun]
