Basic Meaning: twelve kinds of bodhisattva abodes
Senses:
... as described in the Yogâcārabhūmi-śāstra:
- The abode of the bodhisattva nature 菩薩種性住.
- The abode of resolute practice 勝解行住.
- The abode of extreme bliss 極歡喜住.
- The abode of superior morality 增上戒住.
- The abode of intensified thought 增上心住.
The three abodes of superior insight 增上慧住:
- superior insight associated with the factors of enlightenment 覺分相應增上慧住
- superior insight associated with all correct perceptions of reality 諸諦相應增上慧住
- superior insight associated with the cessation of dependently arisen transmigration 緣起流轉止息相應增上慧住.
- the markless abode that has applied practices and exertion 有加行有功用無相住.
- The markless abode with no applied practices and no exertion 無加行無功用無相住.
- The abode of unhindered understanding 無礙解住.
- The abode of ultimate consummation of bodhisattvahood 最上成滿菩薩住. This is followed by the abode of the Tathāgata 如來住.

When the three abodes of superior insight are counted as one stage, the number of twelve is reduced to ten, and in the Yogâcārabhūmi-śāstra, each of these abodes is explained as being equivalent to the same-numbered ground (bhūmi) in the ten grounds of the bodhisattvas 十地.
