Basic Meaning: Manhang
Senses:
(1249–1319); Korean monk from the late Goryeo period and tenth National Teacher of the Suseonsa 修禪社 established by Jinul (知訥; 1158–1210). He was born in Ungjin 熊津. In 1262, at the age of 14, he became a monk and studied under National Teacher Won-o 圓悟國師 (1215–1286; Cheonyeong 天英). Manhang later placed first in the Seon examination (seonseon 禪選) held at Gusan 九山, and made a name for himself by his ardent practice at Geumgangsan 金剛山 and Jirisan. He was appointed to the Samjangsa Society 三藏社 by King Chungnyeol (忠烈王; r.1275–1308) but later taught at other places such as Nangwolsa 郞月社, Unheungsa 雲興社, and Seonwonsa 禪源社. He was summoned by King Chungseon (忠宣王; r.1309–1313) shortly after King Chungseon abdicated the throne to lecture on Seon 禪 at Yeongan Palace 永安宮. Manhang was thereupon given the title Byeoljeonjongju Jungsokjodeung Myoyongjonja 別傳宗主 重續祖燈 妙用尊者 by King Chungseon. He passed away at the age of 61 on August 18th, 1319 while residing at Suseonsa (present-day Songgwangsa 松廣寺). [Juhn Ahn]
