蓮華部發生菩薩

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: Padmakulôdbhava Bodhisattva

Senses:

  • Also 蓮花部發生菩薩. A figure in the Court of the Lotus Division 蓮華部院 in the Garbhadhātu maṇḍala 胎藏界曼荼羅. His flesh is white in color, and he is seated on a red lotus. His left hand holds a blossomed lotus at the left thigh. His right hand is placed at the chest with the ring-finger bent. Seed syllable: mo. Mudrā: lotus añjali 蓮華合掌. Mantra: namaḥ samantabuddhānāṃ kṣaḥ ḍaḥ ra yaṃ kaṃ svāhā. He is the deity presiding over the production of deities in this section of the maṇḍala. According to the Mahāvairocana-sūtra 大日經 (T 848), Yaśodharā Bodhisattva 耶輸陀羅菩薩 is positioned here. The Darijing shu 大日經疏 (T 1796) does not mention this deity. It is believed that *Padmakula Bodhisattva 蓮華種族菩薩 mentioned in the Amoghapāśa-kalparāja 不空羂索經 (T 1092) was employed here to function as a parallel to Vajrakulôdbhava 發生金剛部菩薩 (金剛部發生菩薩) from the Court of Vajrapāṇi 金剛手院. The Ishiyama shichishū 石山七集 gives the mantra as namaḥ samantabuddhānāṃ kṣaṇatara yaṃ kaṃ svāhā.
