Basic Meaning: Skt. bhagavat, bhagavān
Senses:
Transliteration of the Sanskrit, meaning the blessed one or world-honored one (Tib. bcom ldan 'das). A term commonly used to refer to Śākyamuni Buddha. Bhagavat is a term in ancient Indian religion used to name sages, and which is said to included six connotations: powerful 自在 (aiśvarya); correct meaning (dharma); unaffected by praise (vairāgya); auspicious 吉祥 (śrī); excellent reputation 名稱 (yaśas) and liberated (mokṣa). Generally interpreted by 世尊. [Charles Muller, Stephen Hodge]
In the Buddhabhūmi-sūtra, the six connotations are powerful 自在, burning 熾盛, attractive 端嚴, good reputation 名稱, auspicious 吉祥, and venerable 尊貴. (T 1530.26.292a25) [Charles Muller]
The Prajñāpāramitā-śāstra attributes four kinds of qualities to the Bhagavat: possession of virtue; possession of discrimination; praiseworthiness and the ability to eradicate defilements. Other texts give other sets of meanings. One of the ten epithets 十號 of the Buddha. According to Xuanzang, bhagavat has the six meanings of: one who possesses auspicious marks; one who destroys illusion and evil; one who is provided with such auspicious virtues of freedom as the Dharma, fame, good marks, desire and intelligence; one who has completely understood the Four Noble Truths; one who accepts and maintains various excellent practices and one who has abandoned the wandering of transmigration. (Pāli bhagavant, bhagavā; Tib. bcom ldan 'das) [ 婆迦婆, 婆伽婆, 薄迦, 薄伽] [Charles Muller]
