Senses:

  • (1213–1278. ); posthumous title 大覺禪師. Chinese monk of the Linji (J. Rinzai) school 臨濟宗, originally from Sichuan, and a transmitter of the lineage of Wuming Huixing 無明慧性 (1162–1237). Founder of the Daikaku Branch 大覺派, one of the twenty-four transmissions of Zen 禪宗二十四流 that reached Japan. Arrived in Japan in 1246 and received the support of Hōjō Tokiyori 北條時賴 (1227–63) to become the founder of the Kenchōji 建長寺 in Kamakura, subsequently abiding at Kenninji 建仁寺 and Jufukuji 壽福寺.
