Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: Xingxiu

Senses:

  • (1166–1246) A Caodong 曹洞宗 monk of the Southern Song 南宋. Sobriquet Wansong Xingxiu 萬松, also known as Wansong Xingxiu 萬松行秀. Originally from Jieliang 解梁 in Henei 河內, born with the secular surname of Cai Baoen 蔡報恩. He entered the saṃgha as a youth under the tutelage of Yunyun 贇允 of the Jingtusi 淨土寺 in Xingzhou 邢州 (present-day Xingtai 邢臺 in Hebei 河北). After full ordainment, he went to learn from Sheng Moguang 勝默光 of Qingshousi 慶壽寺, where he had an awakening experience. This was soon followed by training under Xue Yanman 雪巖滿 of the Damingsi 大明寺 in Cizhou 磁州, where in less than a month, he experienced a thorough awakening. After spending a couple of years there, he returned to Xingzhou, where he built and stayed in a hermitage called Myriad Pines 萬松, where he trained himself, and became widely known as the 'Old Man from Myriad Pines'  萬松老人; he was also called the Old Man Baoren 報恩老人. In 1193 the emperor conferred upon him the silk brocade robe of the eminent monk. In 1197 he was invited to stay at Qiyinsi 棲隱寺 in Yangshan 仰山. He later resided at various temples, including Jingtusi 淨土寺, Wanshousi 萬壽寺 in Zhongdu 中都, and Baoensi 報恩寺 in Yanjing 燕京. Soon after, he retired to Congrong 從容 hermitage, where in response to the request of Yelǜ Chucai 耶律楚材, he took the collection of gong'ans commented on by Hongzhi 宏智, added his own comments, and compiled them into the famous Congrong lu 從容錄 (6 fasc.), which would, along with his Qingyi lu 請益錄 (2 fasc.) become seminal texts for the future transmission of the Caodong school 曹洞宗 of Chan. He also wrote the Zu denglu 祖燈錄, Shishi xinwen 釋氏新聞, Mingdao ji 鳴道集, and the Sihui yulu 四會語錄. [Charles Muller; source(s): Ui, ZGDJT, Kamata, FGD]
