西礀子曇

Basic Meaning: Sijian Zitan

Senses:

  • (1249–1306. ); posthumous title 大通禪師. Chinese monk of the Linji school 臨濟宗. Originally a native of Zhejiang, he entered the Buddhist order at Guangdu Temple 廣度寺 in Mt. Zituo 紫籜山. Founder of the Seiken Branch 西礀派 of Japanese Rinzai, one of the twenty-four transmissions of Zen 禪宗二十四流 that reached Japan. Came to Japan in 1271 following an invitation by Hōjō Tokimune, staying at Kenchōji 建長寺 and then Tōfukuji 東福寺. In 1278 he returned to China, then came again to Japan in 1299.
