見道

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: path of seeing

Senses:

  • (darśana-mārga) The third of the five stages of attainment 五位 in the Abhidharma/Yogâcāra path system. It is the stage of the clear view of the Four Noble Truths 四諦 (therefore also called 見諦 and 見諦道) and also the stage at which one enters the level of uncontaminated cognition 無漏智. 〔二障義 HBJ 1.808c12 〕 It is after entry into this stage that one is considered in the Abhidharma and Yogâcāra to be enlightened 聖者. In Abhidharma doctrine it is equivalent to the stage of stream-winner, and in Mahāyāna, equivalent to the stage of the first bhūmi 初地. In the Abhidharmakośa-bhāṣya it is equivalent to the attainment of the fourth of the four wholesome roots 四善根, while in Yogâcāra, it is equivalent to the stage of proficiency 通達位. During this stage the practitioner removes the afflictions created in this lifetime (見惑, 見所斷, 見斷煩惱, 見道所斷). After the consummation of this stage, one moves on to the path of cultivation 修道, where the correct views attained in the path of seeing are thoroughly and repeatedly practiced. The practices of the path of seeing are capable of eliminating the afflictions produced by discrimination in this lifetime 分別起, but in order to eliminate the afflictions carried over from prior lifetimes 倶生, one must enter the path of cultivation (Skt. mārga-darśana, ārya-mārga, darśana, darśanâkhya, dṛk-patha, dṛṅ-mārga, niyāma, mārgâbhisamaya; Tib. mthong ba'i lam, mthong lam).
