Basic Meaning: dhyāna for enlightenment

Senses:

  • 諸覺禪 is probably a translation of bodhy-aṅgāni "the [seven] elements of enlightenment" . 〔道行般若經 T 224.8.470b22〕 [Seishi Karashima; source(s): Lokakṣema-AP]
  • 覺 is an early translation for 'discursive thought'   vitarka , later translated as 尋. Since, in the first meditation 初禪 there is mental function, it is rendered this way. 〔佛所行讚〕 [Charles Muller; source(s): Nakamura]
