Basic Meaning: ten buddhas of the realm of understanding

Senses:

  • All existence discriminated as ten forms of Buddha. The Huayan school sees all things as pan-Buddha, but discriminates them into ten forms: all the living 衆生身, countries (or places) 國土身, karma 業報身, śrāvakas 聲聞身, pratyekabuddha 辟支佛身 s, bodhisattvas 菩薩身, tathāgatas 如來身, jñānakāya 智身, dharmakāya 法身, and space 虛空身; i.e. each is a corpus of the Buddha. 〔華嚴經內章門等雜孔目章 T 1870.45.560a2〕 [Charles Muller; source(s): Nakamura, Soothill]
