Basic Meaning: Hand Treatise

  • The Jie quan lun. (Skt. *Hasta-vāla-prakaraṇa, Tib. Cha-śas-kyi yan-lag ces-bya-ba'i rab-tu-byed-pa. 1 fasc., K 643, T 1620. Also called the Jie quan lun 解拳論. Chinese tradition takes Dignāga 陳那 as the author and Tibetan tradition ascribes the text to Āryadeva 提婆, but this position is not well-accepted by scholars. Translation by Paramârtha 眞諦: between the 2nd year of Yongding 永定 and the 1st year of Taijian 太建, Chen dynasty ( 558-569. ) in Zhizhi Monastery 制旨寺.1 Nanjō 1255; Ono. 3:98b; Tōhoku 3844, 3845, 3848, 3849; P. 5244, 5245, 5248, 5249. At first the treatise explains that the three realms 三界 are merely nominal existence and not substantial. In order to show the intrinsic natures of all phenomena and produce wisdom without cognitive distortion, the metaphor of the rope and snake is given. One considers a rope to be a snake, which was arisen by delusion; the snake is merely an illusion that does not exist. If we consider the rope from the perspective of its parts, the proper form of the rope is not perceived. Since it is not perceived, the perception of the rope is also, like the thought of the snake, merely illusion and disappears. Since things without parts cannot be conceived, the last part is equivalent to non-existence. Therefore a wise man should not regard what is mere illusion as reality. Thus, knowing thoroughly according to reality, the practitioner, being rendered capable by his conduct in relation to color, etc., quickly attains the fruit of his asceticism. (Reference Thomas: 1918) This treatise was composed between 480 to 540 CE. Variant translation is T 1621 Zhangzhong lun 掌中論.
