Basic Meaning: Treatise on the Way to Attain Deliverance

Senses:

  • Vimokṣamārga-śāstra; 12 fasc., K 968, T 1648; Compilation attributed to Upatiṣya (優波底沙 Upatissa). Translated by Saṃghabhara 僧伽婆羅 (JEBD gives Saṃghapāla): 14th year of Tian Jian 天監 Liang dynasty 梁 (CE 515. ), in Zhanyun Hall 占雲館, Yangdu 楊都.1 Closely related in content to the Pāli Visuddhimagga 淸淨道論, this text elucidates the path to liberation through the threefold practice of morality , concentration , and wisdom . This text is translated in N.R.M. Ehara, Soma Thera and Kheminda Thera,The Path of Freedom, by the Arahant Upatissa, Translated into Chinese (Gedatsu Do Ron) by Tipitaka Sanghapala of Funan (Colombo, Ceylon: D. Roland D. Weerasuria, 1961). A single chapter was translated into Tibetan in the late eighth century by Vidyākaraprabha and Dpal brtsegs, and has been edited and translated into English from the Tibetan in P. V. Bapat, Vimuktimārga Dhutaguṇanirdeśa (Bombay, 1964). Passages are also preserved in citations in Daśabalaśrīmitraʼs Saṃskṛtâsaṃskṛtaviniścaya; see Peter Skilling, “The Saṃskṛtâsaṃskṛta-viniścaya of Daśabalaśrīmitra,”  Buddhist Studies Review 4, no. 1 (1987): 3–23 (esp. 7, where correspondences to the English translation from the Chinese are listed).
