詩僧

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: poet monk

Senses:

  • In its broad sense, this refers to any monk who is capable of writing poetry, especially one who devotes much time and energy to it. More narrowly, the term refers to those monks who write in the high literary style and become famous for their verse. In the latter sense, the term was invented sometime in the second half of the eighth century to designate a group of southern monks centered around Lingyi 靈一 and Jiaoran 皎然. As the term expanded in its meaning, poet-monks came to be more highly regarded in literary society, reaching their peak perhaps some time in in the early tenth century. The most famous poet-monks of this era were Guanxiu 貫休 and Qiji 齊己. Other prominent poet-monks of the Tang include Lingche 靈澈, Tanyu 曇域, Huguo 護國, Fayan 法眼, Guangxuan 廣宣, Wuke 無可, Xuzhong 虛中, Xiumu 修睦, Sengluan 僧鸞, Wenxiu 文秀, Kepeng 可朋, Kezhi 可止, Qichan 栖蟾, Qibai 棲白, Qingsai 淸塞, Chumo 處默, and Shangyan 尙顏. Zhi Dun 支盾, Baoyue 寶月, and Huixiu 惠休 are frequently cited as predecessors to the Tang monks, and hundreds more—in Japan and Korea as well as China—came later. 〔全唐文, 全唐詩話, 詩人玉屑, 唐書藝文志
