Basic Meaning: preaching mudrā
Senses:
The hand-sign made by a buddha preaching his doctrine, of which there are three types (dharmacakra-mudrā). (1) A mudrā wherein the fingertip of the ring finger and the thumb are touching, and with the other fingers extended, the left hand is raised in front of the chest, with the right hand covering it on top, without touching each other. (2) A mudrā wherein the middle finger and the thumb of the right hand are matched, the ring finger and the forefinger are expanded and slightly bent, with the pinky standing straight up; the left hand is straight up, on the breast. A mudrā wherein the forefinger and the thumb of the left hand touch, and the middle finger, ring finger, and pinky are extended, placed above the breast with the palm facing up; the right hand touches the tips of the middle finger and so forth of the left hand, facing outward. This three forms show the aspect of the sermon of the three bodies [of the Buddha] of the transformation body, the reward body, and the Dharma-body. Also known as 法輪印, 金剛輪印, and 轉法輪印, 勝願吉祥法輪印. See 九品印.
